A Time to Reflect
Posted on 29. Dec, 2008 by Linda Lord in Blog
We are closing out another year, amid much speculation on the economic forecast. As a business owner myself, it has caused me to stop and reflect on my current practices. What has worked in the past might not be the answer for 2009. I have been reading several articles on the businesses and professions that are more ‘recession-proof’ and ways to ‘recession-proof’ our lives.
Two things have occurred to me. One, is something my father said to me many years ago, “If you are good at what you do, there will always be a place for you to do it.” The other is my own saying that, “The first game you must win is the one in your head.”
I am not suggesting that we ignore what is going on around us; just that we be careful not to get sucked into the headlines. We still have a tremendous opportunity to grow our businesses. It may demand greater versatility or creativity. It may mean leaving behind non-profitable product lines or services. It may even mean we have to change a few things about ourselves and the way we view ourselves professionally. But these can all be good things. Things that we probably should have already been doing, but there wasn’t enough incentive.
I am not a pollyanna. I am not pretending that this year won’t have its challenges. All I am saying is that by getting resourceful and staying positive, we may discover more opportunities than obstacles.
